Shooting with Gary Stochl   1 comment

When we have great weather in Chicago I try to take some pictures before boarding the train to my suburb. One day I noticed that at the end of the day, the bright sun shines like projector through the entrance of the station.  It makes an incredible contrast and long shadows.

So, while I am enjoying second day at the same location, I saw another photographer, with a classic Leica on his neck, had the same idea. I took one shot of him and, since he obviously saw, I decided to introduce myself.  His name is Gary. I thought for a moment about the coincidence of having the same name as Garry Winogrand. Gary was shooting for a week, taking advantage of this amazing light. I asked for permission and took another picture of him.

That would be the end of the story if I had not replied in the street photography forum with the link to my picture of Gary. They recognized him as the Chicago based photographer, Gary Stochl. It did not take long to find out that this was indeed Gary Stochl – an incredible photographer with a remarkable life story.

  1. I have heard many times that photography’s not about the photos, its about the opportunities they offer and create as well as the people you meet along the way, this is a classic example of this.
